WEEK ELEVEN- Daily Log: Friday, May 11, 2007

  • I was very happy to be at my placement today because I really missed being there. I realized that it brightens my days, and just makes me happy to work there. The only downside to working there these days is the intense humidity that has settled in the building. St. Andrew does not put its air conditioner on until late May or early June to conserve energy. Since I am upstairs all the time, the heat is even worse, so I have to bring water and be prepared for these conditions.

  • The first thing I did upon my arrival at my placement was mark some of the "dictees" that the grade sixes, sevens, and eights had completed this morning. I had to find out what the french words meant in english for my own reference with regards to marking them. The marks are based on spelling and the english meaning of the word. There were so many of these tests that I had to bring them to class to finish up. Before I continued marking, however, I had to dictate the afternoon class' dictees. Their test was on different types of food, and they were supposed to have studied throughout the week. I made sure that I spoke loudly, clearly, slowly, and with an evident french accent. I also made sure to repeat the word a few times to ensure that the students heard everything. The students seemed to respond well to my test, and there were no complaints.

  • After the quiz, the students worked on page 58 in their cahiers. They were required to identify all of the ingredients on a picture of a sandwhich. There were about ten ingredients, and they had to write the food's name in french. I helped students with whatever they needed help with, however I do draw the line when the students ask questions that go beyond helping and basically want me to do their work. While the students worked on their activity I continued to mark the other dictees ontop of the ones that I had just dictated.

  • During planning time I marked the last few of the tests, and proceeded to record the marks in the markbook. I then marked some of the bizarre meals that the grade sixes had made pertaining to the partitive lesson. I also recorded these marks. I worked for three and a half hours today.
